Position Summary: A Research Fellow­ opportunity is available in the Neural Engineering Laboratories at Mayo Clinic to study and model the biophysical interactions of electrical stimulation and neurotransmitter efflux across neural circuits associated with neuromodulation therapies (e.g., deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, optical stimulation, etc.). The researcher will be part of a multidisciplinary team involving neuroscientists, engineers, chemists, biologists, and clinicians.­The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual with a demonstrated record of accomplishments, including a strong publication record.

Responsibilities: A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic. 800146; J2WRTP

Qualifications:
  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Neural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computational Neuroscience, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Experience with finite element modeling and cable theory.
  • Experience with biophysical modeling software (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS, SCIRun, etc).
  • Experience with analytical and statistical software packages (e.g., Matlab, LabView, R, etc.), and/or programming languages (e.g., C, C++, Python, etc.).
  • Strong interest in experimental/computational/clinical neuroscience, neuromodulation technology, and brain computer interfaces (BCI).
  • High level of initiative.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team (including physicians, biologists, chemists, engineers, technicians, and veterinarians).
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain a high level of organization and professionalism.

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere. Additional Qualifications:
  • Strong background in signal processing (analog and/or digital).
  • Deep understanding of statistical methods relevant to the interpretation of large time-varying data sets, multivariate signal analysis, feature extraction, and algorithm development.
  • Ability to independently plan, execute, and troubleshoot experimental designs.
  • Working knowledge of neurophysiology and/or neurochemistry.
