Position Summary: The Health Care Systems Engineering Program at Mayo Clinic is seeking a Research Associate. The program is multidisciplinary and applies multiple methods, both quantitative and qualitative, to analyze, plan, and experiment with policies and practices in health care, with opportunities to directly study the Mayo Clinic practice (including the Mayo Practice-based Research Network with in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa). The position is located in the Mayo Clinic Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery and its vibrant research program focused on improving the processes, quality, and outcomes of health care. This position interacts and collaborates with the Center for Innovation, the Mayo CTSA, Mayo programs in Quality and Safety, and researchers in the Department of Health Sciences Research which includes the Divisions of Health Care Policy and Research, Biomedical Statistics and Informatics, and Epidemiology.

Other responsibilities will include using qualitative problem-structuring techniques, simulation, and advanced quantitative methods for the purpose of examining assumptions, facilitating an in-depth understanding of an organization's operations, deciding on practical action, supporting the management of change, and reviewing progress. The Health Systems Engineering Research Associate will publish research in peer-reviewed journals, and provide graduate teaching and advising as well as national leadership in health services research.

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Management Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Human Factors or related engineering, management or applied cognitive psychology disciplines from an accredited University.

Responsibilities: A Research Associate at Mayo Clinic is a temporary transitional role with the primary purpose to allow qualified individuals to work within an established investigator’s program in preparation for an academic and/or independent research career. The ability to perform specialized or complex functions would typically be demonstrated through review of scientific accomplishments, contributions, and peer-reviewed publications averaging at least one per year post doctoral degree. Qualifications: Must have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program, with evidence of publications and other scientific accomplishments. Please attach the following required documents at the time of application:

Additional Qualifications:
  • Applicants must demonstrate ability to function as a productive member of multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience in some of the following methods is desirable: advanced statistical modeling, forecasting, scheduling algorithms, simulation, deterministic and/or stochastic optimization, system dynamics, agent-based, network modeling, data-driven mining, reliability, human factors analysis, work force evaluation, and project management methods.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills including a demonstrated ability to write in different styles including academic journals, briefing notes, and non-technical summaries for non-engineers.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. health care system is necessary, and experience is desirable. Ability to obtain external funding is a significant strength, although this position does not require external support.
