Is the coding subject matter expert for coding staff, members of the management team, and for other Sections within the Revenue Cycle, as well as multiple areas outside the Revenue Cycle including specific physician practices and the Legal Department. Makes appropriate decisions and recommendations to Supervisor regarding coding of accounts. Assists with training and education. Maintains expert knowledge of coding work flow and optimizes use of available technology. Is an expert in navigating the electronic medical record and all supporting information management and billing systems. Works collaboratively with Supervisor as a resource to unit personnel. Assists Supervisor with providing oversight and assistance for all coding related functions, staff orientation, ePraisals, performance improvement plans, PTO, and other management of staff. Participates in the coaching and development of staff, optimization of area productivity, service problem resolution and guideline development. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills when resolving conflicts with staff and customers. Is flexible and leads change in the work environment. May represent area on task forces/committees, etc. May perform functional activities of the work team. Demonstrates expert job knowledge and applies current coding and billing regulations, policies, processes and procedures with effective decision-making and problem solving skills. Abstracts data in compliance with national, regional, and local policies, and interprets and reviews medical record documentation to assign accurate CPT-4 or ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes for outpatient cases or ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes and MS-DRG for hospital inpatient cases. Clarifies physician documentation as appropriate. Understands and applies medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, surgical technology, pharmacology, and disease processes. Demonstrates knowledge of sequencing diagnoses and procedure codes outlined in the AMA CPT instructions, CPT Assistant, ICD-9-CM Official Coding Guidelines, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set, CMS guidelines and other resources as applicable. Provides education and support to clinical areas in regard to appropriate documentation and coding of services to achieve accurate billing. Basic Qualifications:
Associate's Degree in a healthcare related program with a minimum of one of the following credentials: RHIT or CCS or CPC; OR Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare related program with a minimum of one of the following credentials: RHIA or CCS or CPC; OR Bachelor's Degree in any field with a CCS credential. Minimum of five years CPT-4 surgical coding and/or ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure coding for outpatient and/or inpatient and/or MS-DRG assignment. Position may be eligible for and/or required for telework based on business need, from an off-site location, following adequate training period and demonstrated ability to meet required metrics.

Other Qualifications:
Prefer experience in outpatient coding. Knowledge of and experience with the electronic medical record and billing systems required. Experience with direct physician interaction required. Requires an excellent understanding of ICD-9 diagnosis and/or procedure coding. Requires an excellent understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and disease processes. Possesses PC skills, both keyboarding and applications. Leadership experience preferred.

License or Certification:
RHIT, RHIA, CCS or CPC credentials.

Exemption Status: Non-exempt
Hours/Pay Period: 80
Schedule Details: Monday - Friday; flexible shifts between 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Compensation Detail: Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
