Job Description
Positions are available either as telework or on-site at Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ, Jacksonville, FL, or Rochester, MN.

We are currently seeking the best experienced surgical coders from across the nation to join our high-performing coding team. Even though our coders are located throughout the country, we have a strong communication network that keeps people connected throughout their work day.

Coders working from home are provided all necessary equipment and software including a desktop computer, two monitors, and a desktop i-phone connected to the Mayo Clinic internet.

Demonstrates expert job knowledge and applies current coding and billing regulations, policies, processes and procedures with effective decision-making and problem solving skills. Abstracts, interprets and reviews medical record documentation to assign accurate CPT-4 procedure and may assign ICD-9 diagnosis codes for procedures performed in the operating room as well as complex services performed in a procedure room (for example, Interventional Radiology). Assigns appropriate modifiers. Clarifies physician documentation as appropriate. Understands and applies medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, surgical technology, pharmacology, and disease processes. Demonstrates knowledge of sequencing diagnoses and procedure codes outlined in the AMA CPT instructions/guidelines, CPT Assistant, ICD-9-CM Official Coding Guidelines, CMS guidelines and other resources as applicable. May provide education and support to clinical areas in regard to appropriate documentation and coding of services to achieve accurate billing. Meets established coding and abstracting quality and productivity standards. May provide training and/or quality support as directed. Is flexible and willing to adapt to changes in the work environment. Maintains effective and professional communication skills. Demonstrates excellent customer service. Contributes to a positive departmental image by exhibiting professionalism, teamwork and mutual respect. Practices continuous improvement. Is proficient in navigating the electronic medical record and all supporting information management and billing systems.

Hourly rates are based on regional markets, with the minimum and maximum rates defined as follows:

North Central - $21.40-$32.10 Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio

Northeast - $24.80-$37.21 Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C.

Southeast - $21.40-$32.10 Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida

South Central - $24.08-$36.13 Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana

West Coast - $27.91-$41.88 Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii

Basic Qualifications:
Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related program with a minimum of one of the following credentials: RHIT or RHIA or CPC. External candidates require a minimum of 3 years' CPT-4 surgical coding experience or Bachelor’s degree in any field with a CPC and 5 years of CPT-4 surgical coding experience. Internal candidates to Mayo Clinic Coding Operations require a minimum of 1 year of production coding experience in Coding Operations including or in addition to a minimum of 1 year performing CPT-4 surgical coding. Other Qualifications:
Requires a good understanding of surgical CPT-4 and ICD-9 diagnosis coding. Experience with direct physician interaction preferred. Requires a good understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and disease processes. Prefer surgical coding experience for a surgeon affiliated with a large teaching and/or Level I Trauma medical facility providing complex medical and surgical services. Possesses PC skills, both keyboarding and applications. Knowledge of and experience with the electronic medical record and billing systems required.

License or Certification:
RHIT or RHIA or CPC credential.

Radiology transcription experience is preferred

Functions as a Medical Transcriptionist and Voice Recognition Editor. Assists Administration and the medical staff in maintaining an accurate patient record. Transcribes, organizes, prints, distributes, retrieves, and maintains all transcribed reports. Completes work as assigned to meet department goals.

Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.Good working knowledge of PC to include software and hardware. The ability to resource the internet for references. The ability to operate designated word processing, dictation, and transcription equipment and other equipment as specified. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Will transcribe all radiology modalities: CT, Ultrasound, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Interventional Radiology.
